The series is a great dungeon-crawling RPG, but it also doubles as a social sim with some excellent characters and great themes (even if it fails to live up to them, sometimes). While Persona 5 Royal is probably the most recognizable of the three to mainstream audiences, starting with Persona 3 Portable, moving to Persona 4 Golden, and finishing up with Persona 5 Royal is important because it will both help you appreciate just how far the series has come over the years, and be a much easier transition-rather than going back to Persona 3 after having experienced all of Persona 5’s modern sensibilities. Three of the best JRPGs on the market are now on Game Pass, and as harrowing as their hour count might look, playing all three of the modern Persona games is well worth the time investment.
